Traveling This Summer? Here’s What to Know About Taking Hemp Products on the Road

You’ve planned the trip. Flights are booked, the itinerary is set, and your bag is almost packed. Then you pause at the bathroom counter, Sweet Dreams in hand, and think: Can I actually bring this?

It’s one of the most common questions I hear from people in our community — and I completely understand why. The rules around hemp feel like they should be simple, but the patchwork of state laws, TSA policies, and general internet noise makes the whole thing feel murkier than it needs to be.

Here’s what you actually need to know before you zip that bag.

First: What the Law Says

Hemp-derived products — gummies, tinctures, and topicals made from hemp containing no more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC — are federally legal in the United States under the 2018 Farm Bill. That’s the foundation everything else rests on.

This matters because federal law governs federal spaces: airports, interstate highways, and national parks, for example. If you’re traveling domestically with hemp products that meet that threshold, you’re starting from a solid legal footing.

That said, “federally legal” doesn’t mean “zero considerations.” A few specifics are worth knowing before you leave home.

Flying with Hemp: What TSA Actually Does (and Doesn’t) Do

TSA’s job is to find security threats — not to enforce drug laws. Their official policy states that they do not specifically search for marijuana or other drugs, and that if they do encounter something during screening, they refer the matter to law enforcement.

For hemp-derived CBD products that comply with federal law, the practical picture looks like this: they’re permitted in both carry-on and checked bags. Liquids (tinctures, beverage additives) follow the standard 3-1-1 rule in carry-ons — 3.4 ounces or less, in a quart-sized clear bag. Gummies have no liquid restrictions and travel easily in either bag.

My recommendation: keep your products in their original packaging. A clearly labeled product from a reputable brand — with your name on the order if you have it — is a much smoother conversation than a loose gummy in a plastic bag. And if you’re traveling with a tincture, tuck a printed copy of the Certificate of Analysis (COA) in your bag. It’s a one-page lab report showing exactly what’s in your product. Reputable hemp brands make these available on their websites, and it’s the kind of documentation that answers questions before they’re even asked.

State-by-State: A Few Places to Double-Check

Here’s where things get slightly more complicated. While hemp is federally legal, a small number of states have enacted their own restrictions. Arkansas is a clear example — hemp-derived edibles and certain CBD products are not legal for sale or possession there, regardless of federal law.

Before you travel, it’s worth a quick search for hemp laws in your destination state, especially if you’re heading somewhere you haven’t visited since hemp regulations evolved. A five-minute search before you leave is worth far more than a conversation you don’t want to have at your destination.

If you’re a client working with me directly, feel free to reach out before a trip — this is exactly the kind of thing I can help you sort out quickly.

One timing note worth flagging: the federal hemp law landscape is changing on November 12, 2026. If you’re reading this after that date, some of the federal framework described here may have shifted. I’ll be publishing updated guidance as that deadline approaches.

One clear note: international travel is a different story entirely. Hemp and CBD regulations vary dramatically country to country, and many destinations that seem straightforward have strict import laws. For this post, I’m keeping the focus on domestic U.S. travel. If you’re heading abroad, please research your destination specifically — or ask me.

Packing Smart: A Few Practical Notes

Gummies are the easiest travel companions in the BoBo Botanicals lineup. Calm Clarity and Sweet Dreams both come in resealable pouches that tuck neatly into a toiletry bag or day bag. No liquid rules, no special handling. Sweet Dreams Plus, at 50mg, is worth packing if you’re one of those people who sleeps terribly in hotels — which, based on my conversations with people in our community, is most of us.

Tinctures and beverage additives (like VELORIA, launching later this year) travel in carry-ons as liquids under 3.4 oz, or can go in checked bags without size restriction. If you’re bringing a tincture, the original box and a COA print-out are your best friends.

Dose consistency matters when you travel. Your routine is your routine for a reason. If you’ve found that 10mg before bed is your sweet spot at home, disrupting that during travel — when your sleep is already challenged by time zones, unfamiliar beds, and changed schedules — isn’t the moment to experiment. Bring what you know works, and bring enough of it.

A Quick Pre-Travel Checklist

Before you head to the airport or hit the road:

  • Products in original, labeled packaging ✓
  • COA printed or saved to your phone ✓
  • Tinctures/liquids in your quart bag if carry-on ✓
  • Destination state laws quickly confirmed ✓
  • Enough product for the full trip (plus a day or two buffer) ✓

The Bottom Line

Hemp belongs in your carry-on right alongside your supplements, your good lip balm, and the neck pillow you tell yourself you’re not embarrassed to use. Traveling with hemp products doesn’t have to be complicated — it just requires a little preparation and the right information.

If you’ve been curious about which products might work best for your travel routine specifically, I’d love to help you think it through. Every person I work with is different, and a trip — whether it’s a week on the coast or a cross-country family visit — is a good reason to have a plan that’s actually built for you.
