Ditch the Hangover: Why More Adults Are Swapping Cocktails for Hemp

The ritual is fine. The ingredient might not be.
For a long time, alcohol had a free pass — especially the kind that looks like a glass of wine or two at the end of the day. Not excessive. Not problematic. Just part of the rhythm. Dinner comes together, a drink in hand. A neighbor’s gathering, a cocktail without much thought.
But that sense of harmlessness is starting to shift.
In January 2025, the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory confirming a causal link between alcohol and multiple types of cancer — including at levels most people consider moderate.
That’s when the question quietly became: is this still worth it?
Here’s what the research actually says
The advisory didn’t introduce a fringe idea — it clarified existing science. Alcohol is now linked causally to at least seven types of cancer, including breast, colon, esophageal, and liver cancers. Not a correlation. A causal relationship.
The finding on moderate drinking is the one that surprises people most. A 2025 systematic review of 62 studies — with sample sizes reaching into the tens of millions — found that even light and moderate drinking carries measurable cancer risk. About one in four alcohol-related cancer cases involves someone drinking two or fewer drinks a day.
And here’s the part worth sitting with: as of late 2025, more than half of American adults didn’t know alcohol affected cancer risk at all. The people least likely to know? People who drink.
That’s not a judgment. It’s a gap in information — and one worth closing.
You are not alone in rethinking this
In 2025, nearly half of Americans said they were trying to drink less — a 44% increase from just two years prior. Dry January participation rose 36% in a single year. Nonalcoholic beer sales jumped 22% over the course of 2024.
About 30% of adults in our age range said they planned to cut back in 2025, and that number has been climbing steadily.
This isn’t a sobriety movement in the traditional sense. It’s a recalibration — people asking whether the drink is still earning its place in the evening.
Why hemp is a completely different kind of wind-down
Your body has a built-in regulatory system that alcohol doesn’t work with.
It’s called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), and it plays a role in mood, sleep, and how your nervous system processes the day. You actually produce your own cannabinoids as part of this system — hemp-derived cannabinoids complement your system.
CBD works with your endocannabinoid system. Alcohol overwhelms it.
Hemp cannabinoids like CBD interact with the ECS the way a key fits a lock — specific, targeted, working with your body’s own chemistry. Alcohol forces its effects through broad neurological disruption, which is why tolerance builds, sleep degrades, and the morning after at sixty feels nothing like the morning after at thirty.
Early research also shows scientific interest in CBD’s relationship to the neurological pathways involved in stress and reward. The science is still developing, but the foundation is compelling — and the practical difference is something many people notice right away.
No spike. No crash. No next-day fog.
What the swap actually looks like
For most of my customers, this wasn’t a dramatic decision. It was: what if I had a Calm Clarity gummy when I get home instead of a glass of wine? What if the ritual stayed and the ingredient changed?
Calm Clarity is our daytime broad-spectrum gummy — 10mg, clean ingredients, designed to take the edge off without taking you out of the game. It’s become the quiet favorite for exactly this moment: the 5 o’clock shift that used to belong to alcohol.
And something else I’m excited about: we have something new coming to Bobo Botanicals that was designed for exactly this space.
VELORIA — part of our Velvet Collection — is a water-soluble hemp beverage additive you stir into any drink to turn it into something worth lingering over. Now in development, we’re refining the formula to achieve the right balance — with a launch planned before the leaves fly.
The mocktail recipes we’ve built around it — Hi Chai!, Noir & Easy, Silk & Sable, Crimson Hour, Sundowner, Grin & Tonic — are designed to feel like an upgrade, not a substitute.
The evening ritual isn’t going anywhere — just the ingredient
The goal here isn’t abstinence. It’s intention.
The people making this shift are still at every gathering, still holding something in hand, still marking the end of the workday with something they enjoy. They’ve changed what’s in the glass — and they’re sleeping better for it.
If you’re curious what that might look like for you, I’d love to help you figure it out.
