Marijuana vs. Hemp—and What Cannabinoids Mean for Your Wellness

At BoBo Botanicals, we believe in the thoughtful use of hemp-derived cannabinoids—sometimes THC on its own, often in combination with others—to help you unwind without slowing down. And if you’re wondering about the difference between marijuana and hemp, chances are you’re also curious about what a cannabinoid is and what they can do for you. Let’s break it down.
Marijuana vs. Hemp: Same Plant, Different Profiles
Both marijuana and hemp belong to the same species: Cannabis sativa L. The difference is their potency and chemical makeup:
- Hemp: Hemp is naturally lower in THC (the compound that causes a “high”) and rich in CBD, CBC, CBN, CBG and other non-intoxicating cannabinoids.
- Marijuana: Marijuana has higher THC levels, which can create more noticeable psychoactive effects.
- THC Levels: Although THC levels are lower in hemp than in marijuana, THC in sufficient quantities will make you high, regardless of the source. THC is THC, regardless of which plant it comes from.
Think of hemp and marijuana as two variations of the same plant family; each offers unique benefits when used responsibly.
What Is a Cannabinoid—and What Can It Do for You?
Cannabinoids are natural compounds found in cannabis plants. They interact with your body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS)—a network that helps regulate mood, sleep, pain, appetite, and immune function. This system acts like a balance keeper for your body, and cannabinoids can help support that balance.
Here’s why they matter:
- They can influence CB1 receptors (in the brain and nervous system) and CB2 receptors (in immune and peripheral tissues).
- This interaction can affect how you feel—your mood, your stress levels, your sleep quality, and even how your body responds to discomfort.
Some of the most talked-about cannabinoids include:
- THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol): The cannabinoid most associated with psychoactive effects. It can promote relaxation and relief when used thoughtfully.
- CBD (Cannabidiol): Non-intoxicating and widely used for calm, balance, and recovery.
- CBN (Cannabinol): Often linked to sleep support.
- CBG (Cannabigerol): Sometimes called the “mother cannabinoid,” studied for potential anti-inflammatory benefits.
- CBC (Cannabichromene): Under research for mood and neuroprotective properties.
- THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin): Being explored for energy and metabolic effects.
Each of these is a cannabinoid, and when combined thoughtfully, they can create a more balanced experience—sometimes called the “entourage effect.” We will expand further on these in future posts.
